Help I was diagnosed with LLP

by Elizabeth Small
(Grand Rapids, MI)

I was recently diagnosed in 2008 with Lichenplanopilaris. I'm 40 years old and I don't know much about the condition but would like to know what I need to do.I noticed the problem with my scalp that I would have dry patches and itchiness, some discomfort. So I stopped chemically processing my hair, braiding and that has helped some but my scalp is still extremely dry. The doctor that I treated with was not helpful at all she stated she has no clue on how to treat me. So I did nothing for 3 years and now I'm afraid of loosing my hair so I need someone to help me. I did not add any pictures at this time not until I get a response. My name is Elizabeth Small and my email address is lastnamesmall@yahoo.com Please contact me so I can speak with someone by email or phone.

Response:

Lichen Plano Pilaris is an inflammatory condition that causes damage to hair follicles and has the potential to cause scarring and permanent hair loss.

The cause is not specifically known, but the scalp biopsy usually shows features that resemble a skin disease known as lichen planus.

It is possible for a person to have body and scalp involvement at the same time or on occasion the body only or the scalp only.

Treatment of the scalp condition is focused on stopping the inflammatory condition as quickly as possible either with topical or intralesional steroids for example. In more difficult cases, stronger treatments might require systemic administration of medication.

There should be a dermatologist close to you who should be able to help you with getting the proper treatment. Going for several years with no treatment is usually not the best approach to take.
