If you are familiar with dissecting cellulitis, then you know that it is associated with localized or diffuse swollen areas on the scalp that can bleed or drain pus or be painful and throb.
With every medical condition, the problem can be mild, moderate, or severe.
Milder cases of this condition respond to localized injections of corticosteroids and oral antibiotics.
More severe cases are treated by drainage or aspiration of pus from the areas as well as oral antibiotics and at times systemic steroid medications.
Additionally some individuals with this condition have improved with systemic Accutane which is utilized more for cystic acne and there have also been reports in the medical literature of high dose oral zinc therapy helping with this condition.
One peculiar aspect of this problem is that there are times when pus is obtained from the areas and they look infected, but when a bacterial culture is done, nothing grows and the lesions are sterile. So, this is a case where the antibiotics taken internally do not actually help even though it looks like they should.
