Over The Counter Medication for Scalp Irritation NEW
by: Seymour M. Weaver, III, M.D.

The symptoms you describe suggest an area of eczema which might be secondarily infected with bacteria.

It would be necessary to do a skin scraping and look at it under a microscope to check for a fungus infection which is one of a number of other possibilities.

If you want to, can try a zinc based shampoo and use it weekly, there are several available.

Use a topical hydrocortisone solution or ointment once or twice a day for a week or longer if necessary.

Use a topical antibiotic such as bacitracin or polysporin twice a day on the tender areas of your scalp.

I cannot prescribe a specific treatment program without doing an examination.

If your symptoms do not improve in 2 weeks, see a dermatologist.
